Pythagoreion — Polycrates Conspiracy

🎭Your Mission

You are a Spartan emissary, infiltrated in Pythagoreion in 525 BC, when Samos's naval supremacy in the Eastern Aegean was at its peak.

Your mission: uncover the

Dive into the heart of Samos, following the living traces of tyrant Polycrates, and foil a 25-century-old conspiracy within his maritime empire.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest begins at the port of Pythagoreion, in front of the modern statue of the tyrant Polycrates, who reigned from 535 to 522 BC. It is here, at this central landmark, that the ruler made Samos the main Aegean naval power around 525 BC, establishing a formidable thalassocracy. The re-used ancient port, base of the Samian fleet of 40 ships sent to Cambyses in 525 BC, still reveals submerged remains and quays. These infrastructures testify to the commercial expansion and power that Polycrates built for the island of Samos, a major archaeological site in the North Aegean.

Continue towards the Eupalinos Tunnel, a technical feat dug around 530 BC under Polycrates. This 1036-meter underground aqueduct, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996, is a masterpiece of ancient Greek hydraulic engineering. It supplied Pythagoreion with drinking water, excavated simultaneously from both ends with an error of less than one meter. This archaeological site of Samos, essential for the city's development, illustrates the ambition of the tyrant who also built the walls and the Temple of Hera. Your route also takes you to the Tower of Lykourgos Logothetis, built in 1821 during the Greek War of Independence.

Approximately 500 meters from the port of Pythagoreion, the 15-meter-high Tower of Lykourgos Logothetis served as a bastion against the Ottomans during the siege of Samos in 1824. Although later than Polycrates' era, this fortification is a testament to Samos's strategic role and its inhabitants' determination to defend their island, echoing the importance of the walls built under the tyrant. This visible tower along your walking route anchors the history of the North Aegean in a continuity of resilience and territorial defense.

Your exploration of Greece's World Heritage will then lead you to the Archaeological Museum of Pythagoreion, founded in 1914. 1 km from the port, it exhibits treasures from the Heraion, including a 6th-century BC kouros and artifacts related to the Samian supremacy period around 525 BC. The collection includes jewelry and ceramics that provide insight into Polycrates' presumed palace and the cultural richness of Samos. This museum is a key stop to understand the history of Samos and the artistic influences of the era of Pythagoras of Samos, the famous mathematician philosopher.

Conclude your thematic circuit by heading to the remains of the Heraion of Samos, a sanctuary of Hera located 6 km from Pythagoreion. Inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1992, this colossal temple, 52.5 meters long, was rebuilt by Polycrates around 530 BC after being destroyed by fire around 540 BC. This religious center, where Polycrates dedicated offerings, is intimately linked to his cultural policy and power. Your interactive visit to Samos will have allowed you to retrace the ambition of a visionary tyrant, from his engineering feats to his religious devotion, leaving behind a legacy of monuments and narratives that continue to shape the history of the North Aegean.
