Banished from Burgos, he conquered a kingdom
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In 1081, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar — El Cid — was banished from Burgos by King Alfonso VI. He left the city with a handful of followers, crossed Spain and ended up conquering Valencia. This game traces his steps, from humiliation to legend.
Burgos is the city of El Cid. It was here that he was born, that he served his king and that he was banished. The Cantar de mio Cid, the oldest preserved Spanish epic poem, opens with his departure from Burgos — doors closed, shutters drawn, no one daring to give him shelter for fear of royal wrath. This game brings you back to that founding exile.
« "From his eyes, he wept with such grief. He turned and looked back. He saw the doors open and the bolts unfastened, the perches empty without cloaks or furs." »— — Cantar de mio Cid, v. 1-4, c. 1200
Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was born around 1043 in a village near Burgos. Educated at the court of King Sancho II of Castile, he became his champion — his campeador. But when Sancho was assassinated in 1072 and Alfonso VI ascended the throne, El Cid fell from grace. In 1081, accused of an unauthorized expedition, he was banished from Castile.
The Cantar de mio Cid recounts his departure from Burgos with poignant intensity. No one would take him in — a royal decree threatened confiscation for anyone who helped him. Only a young girl dared speak to him, telling him to leave. El Cid then crossed Spain as a mercenary, serving Christian and Muslim princes alike, before conquering Valencia in 1094.
In Burgos, his memory is everywhere. The Solar del Cid, at the presumed site of his house, the Monasterio de las Huelgas where the kings of Castile were crowned, and the Cartuja de Miraflores, a jewel of late Gothic architecture, mark a route that interweaves the story of the knight with that of the city that could not keep him.
