Born in 1515 into a family of conversos — Jews converted to Christianity — Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada entered the Convent of the Incarnation at twenty. She spent twenty-seven years there before experiencing a mystical crisis that transformed her life. Her visions and ecstasies convinced her that the Carmelite order must return to its primitive rule of austerity and prayer.
In 1562, she founded the Convent of San José in Ávila, the first of the Discalced Carmelite convents. Opposition was fierce: existing Carmelite convents, local nobility and even the municipality tried to shut down this convent of barefoot women living in absolute poverty. But Teresa persisted, traveling across Spain to found convent after convent, writing at night what would become masterpieces of Spanish mystical literature.
Declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970 — the first woman to receive this title — Teresa of Ávila remains one of the most fascinating figures of the 16th century. Her native city preserves the places that shaped her vocation: the Convent of the Incarnation where she lived, the Convent of Santa Teresa built on her birthplace, and the Cuatro Postes from where, as a child, she tried to flee to convert the Moors.
