The fortress secrets before the fall
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Before Christian armies took Cáceres in 1229, the city was a powerful Almohad fortress. Its walls, towers and cisterns still bear the traces of two centuries of Muslim rule.
Cáceres wears two faces. The one you see — Renaissance palaces, Gothic churches — and the one you glimpse beneath the plaster and coats of arms. The Almohad walls still encircle the old town, the Torre del Horno still keeps watch, and beneath the Plaza Mayor sleeps a forgotten Arab cistern. This game takes you to Cáceres before the Reconquista.
« "Hisn Qazris is an impregnable fortress, surrounded by powerful walls and supplied with abundant water." »— — Al-Idrisi, geographer, 12th century
Cáceres was conquered by the Moors in the 8th century and quickly became a strategic point on the frontier between al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms to the north. In the 12th century, the Almohads, a Berber dynasty from Morocco, transformed the modest stronghold into a true citadel. They erected the fortified enclosure still visible today — over a kilometer of walls punctuated by square towers.
The Torre del Horno, one of the best preserved, served as a watchtower and signal tower. Beneath the city, a network of aljibes — underground cisterns — ensured water supply during sieges. This sophisticated hydraulic system was the key to Almohad resistance against successive assaults by the Christian military orders.
In 1229, after several failed attempts, Alfonso IX of León finally took the city. But rather than raze the Almohad heritage, the conquerors built on top of it. The walls became the foundations of Christian palaces. Today, Cáceres is a palimpsest — a city where each layer hides the previous one, and where Islam surfaces beneath Christianity.
