The cathedral of Burgos is the greatest Gothic mystery in Spain. Its openwork spires, impossible staircases and medieval automaton defy reason. Who were the builders capable of such marvels?
The cathedral of Burgos is not just a place of worship — it is a challenge thrown at gravity. Its openwork spires seem made of lace rather than stone, its Escalera Dorada transforms a simple staircase into a work of art, and its Papamoscas — an 18th-century automaton — has opened its mouth on the hour for three hundred years. Behind every marvel hides a builder whose name history has forgotten.
« "The cathedral of Burgos is a work of angels more than of men." »— — Philip II, King of Spain, 16th century
In 1221, King Ferdinand III of Castile and Bishop Maurice laid the first stone of a cathedral meant to rival the great French works. The first architect, probably trained in Paris or Reims, imported the Rayonnant Gothic style to Castile. In forty years, the main structure was complete — a remarkable feat for the era.
In the 15th century, the Colonia family — John of Cologne and his son Simon — transformed the cathedral into a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic. The openwork spires of the facade, 84 metres tall, are their signature. The Capilla del Condestable, octagonal and crowned with a stellar vault, is considered one of the most perfect spaces in European Gothic architecture.
The Escalera Dorada, created by Diego de Siloé in 1519, marks the transition to the Renaissance. This monumental staircase inspired by Bramante solves an urban planning problem — connecting the cathedral to a raised street — with an elegance that left contemporaries speechless. Today, Burgos Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the only Spanish cathedral listed individually.
